About Us

“Always ask what do you want to do and help people learn how to make their own decisions. And you know what? It's that simple, if we can support each other, we learn from each other.”

~Ed Roberts, Father of Independent Living

Life

Life is a non-profit, Center for Independent Living and has been serving Southeastern Idaho since 1980. We believe that all persons with disabilities are able to not only live but thrive in the communities of their choice. We are one of the three Independent Living Centers in Idaho, and there are currently over 400 Independent Living Centers nation-wide. The first Independent Living Center was created in the 1970’s, in California. Ed Robert’s who is known as the Father of the Independent Living movement, had a crucial role and was an advocate for persons with disabilities to ensure they had the same access and opportunities. Today, we still support the original vision of Independent Living for persons with disabilities. Independent Living is based on the belief in freedom, overcoming barriers, living with dignity, and independence. Every person has the right to make their own choices and to control the decisions in their lives and LIFE will support you in meeting all your independence goals. Interested in learning more about the grass roots efforts of others that created the Independent Living movement? Feel free to read this article posted on the ILRU website.

LIFE has had it own interesting organizational history. LIFE originally started in Southeast Idaho in 1980 as the Center of Resources for Independent People (CRIP). In 1991 CRIP changed its name to Access for Idaho. In 1994 another organization called Eastern Idaho Center for Independence was created. In 1998 Access for Idaho and Eastern Idaho Center for Independence merged to create Living Independently for Everyone (LIFE). In 2020 LIFE changed its name to Life, A Center for Independent Living. In some form or another we have served Southeast Idaho for over 40 years.
